Concerns flagged over destruction of trees along Rupert Craig Highway

Trees planted on the median along the Rupert Craig Highway were damaged, highlighting challenges to beautification efforts around the city.

A citizen, who shared these photos with the News Room, said such actions must be condemned and residents should be more vigilant to prevent any recurrences.

These trees are part of a national tree planting project which was launched last year by the Protected Areas Commission. The project will see 50,000 trees planted throughout the administrative regions of Guyana. The project will be rolled out in phases that will over seven years, see palms, ornamentals, and local tree species planted. During the first phase, trees will be planted to transform newly built highways, hospitals, schools, and government buildings into beautiful visual spaces.

However, the removal of these trees and other instances such as recent vandalism in the Stabroek area hamper beautification efforts.
