18,000 streetlights installed countrywide – Edghill

More than 18,000 streetlights have already been installed in communities across the country under a Government of Guyana community improvement programme.

Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, who spoke about the initiative on Friday, said 100,000 streetlights were procured as part of the initiative. And he highlighted that dozens of contractors, equipped with bucket trucks, are helping to accelerate installations on a fixed-rate basis.

“(This is being done) to ensure that in the communities where people traverse and on the main roads where people have to move, it’s properly lit and that we reduce the risks and the incidents of thefts, harassment or any criminal activity whatsoever,” Edghill said.

While the programme has made significant progress, Edghill acknowledged concerns over some streetlights being stolen after installation.

He issued a clear warning: “Anybody who is caught with stolen Government of Guyana lights, will face the full force of the law.”

In fact, to help address the issue, Edghill said every light installed going forward will have a special laser mark for identification. He also appealed to citizens who have information about unauthorised removal or theft of streetlights to come forward and inform the ministry, assuring that information will be treated with confidence.
