Aligned with its core value of empowerment, MODEC, a leading provider of solutions to the Floating Offshore Oil and Gas market for over 50 years, has been unveiled as title sponsor of the inaugural Tertiary Education Football tournament, set to kick off next month.

Coordinated by the Petra Organisation, the 14-team tournament will run from February 8 to March 8 with MODEC, which has been operating in Guyana since 2024, fully embracing the initiative.

“One of our values is empowerment…,” Country Manager Rafael Fumis declared at the official launch of the tournament on Tuesday in Georgetown.

“…so nothing better than education and sport to empower people and community to develop and grow.”

Fumis, along with Technical Manager of MODEC Joao Soares, joined Co-Director of the Petra Organisation Troy Mendonca and Deputy Chief Education Officer Technical Dr. Ritesh Tularam in revealing details about the competition, which is geared to showcase talents within the tertiary education system.

Fumis expressed his elation at the number of teams that have confirmed their participation for the initial installment of the event.

“…and I hope this first experience is just the first of many to come.”

Soares was particularly delighted to share sentiments at the launch for the simple reason that the tournament “brings together two passions that I have- one is football and the other one is education.”

“Both promote discipline, resilience and leadership,” he asserted.

The Technical Manager further highlighted that the tournament connects with MODEC’s OCEAN value- One team, Care, Empowered, Agile and iNtegrity.

For Dr. Tularam this is an important step in strengthening the role of sport within the tertiary education system and sustaining the holistic development of students and trainees.

“And so education is not confined to classrooms, laboratories and lecture halls. True education prepares individuals for life- leadership, teamwork and (being) responsible citizens. Sport, and moreso football, plays a vital role in building these qualities,” Tularam said.

Lessons on the field such as discipline, perseverance, respect for roles and the ability to work towards a common goal will serve the student/athlete well beyond the pitch, Tuluram stressed.

Giving an overview of the tournament, Mendonca indicated that two teams will be matched against each other to play in a home and away format.

The top seven teams after this phase will advance to the quarter-finals, with the eighth team being the “best” among the remaining seven.

“Of course the stats will decide that (the eighth team),” Mendonca assured.

The champion team is guaranteed G$300,000, runner-up G$200,000, third G$100,000 and fourth G$50,000.

Teams confirmed for the tournament are:
