The Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) has welcomed the government’s $6B sport budget for 2026, describing it as a “strong platform” for international competitiveness.

The endorsement follows the unveiling of the national budget on Monday, which sees a significant pivot toward athlete development and coaching as major infrastructure projects near completion.

For the GBA, the investment is a direct fulfilment of a commitment made by President Dr Irfaan Ali during consultations with sporting bodies last year.

A key highlight for the association is the progress of a new, dedicated badminton and table tennis facility, which is nearing completion.

“Budget 2026 provides a platform to build on recent gains and support the long-term sustainability of the sport,” the GBA said in a statement.

“The focus on improved facilities and investment in people and coaching is critical if we are to compete at the international level.”

While much of the 2025 budget focused on the “heavy lifting” of stadium construction, the 2026 allocation shifts the financial weight toward the National Sports Commission and direct athlete support.

The GBA highlighted three key pillars of the new budget:

    • Expanding grassroots reach through schools and community programmes.
    •  Funding for professional coaching and high-performance training.
    •  Continued financial backing for national athletes competing overseas.

The association expressed its appreciation to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, reaffirming its readiness to collaborate on the “lasting impact” of the government’s strategy.
