The high-pressure world of rapid chess takes centre stage this Sunday as Guyana’s elite junior minds descend on Christ Church Secondary School for the National U16 Championships.

Sponsored by Kitty Square Mall, the seven-round Swiss System tournament will see the nation’s best young tacticians battle against both their opponents and the clock.

With a time control of just 15 minutes plus a five-second increment, the “Rapid” format leaves no room for hesitation.

In the Open division, all eyes are on Candidate Master Sachin Pitamber as the defending champion returns for what will be his final campaign in the U16 bracket, looking to cement his legacy before moving into the senior ranks.

However, the road to the title is far from certain. A “golden generation” of challengers has emerged, led by the formidable Zhang siblings, Alexander and Nicholas.

The field is further bolstered by a surge of younger champions playing “up” an age group, including:

    • Abel Fernandez Ciria: The reigning National U14 Champion.
    • Aiden Tinne: Current National U12 title holder.
    • Alek Ubaldo-Singh & Rafael Park: Seasoned competitors with podium ambitions.
    • The Girls’ Title: A Power Vacuum?

The Girls’ category faces a potential shift in the hierarchy. With Woman Candidate Master Aditi Joshi’s participation currently unconfirmed due to scheduling conflicts, the national crown is effectively “wide open.”

Leading the hunt are Kataleya Sam (U14 Champion) and Divya Persaud (U12 Champion). The pair represent a deep pool of talent that includes Rebha Lachhman and Emma John, all of whom will be eyeing the top spot in what is expected to be the most unpredictable division of the day.

Beyond the main U16 titles, the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) is utilizing the event to identify prospects for the future, with specific medals on offer for the top U14, U12, and U10 players.

“This tournament brings together the very best of our junior community,” a GCF spokesperson noted. “From seasoned champions to newcomers, it is about nurturing the next generation of great Guyanese players.”
