President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Wednesday announced a groundbreaking technology initiative aimed at protecting at-risk women and children from domestic abuse, violence, and gang threats.

Speaking at the opening of the Guyana Police Force Annual Officers’ Conference, President Ali revealed plans to introduce a panic alert system that allows teachers, students, parents, and women to call for help instantly, ensuring faster and more effective responses.

“This is a system that is deployed at scale in Mexico.

“Our technology advisors are examining it and we are going to implement similar systems here,” he said.

The move is particularly significant for educators, as he said almost 90% of teachers in Guyana are women.

“Women are strong, capable, and highly efficient but we also have to invest in technology to help them. They have taken on this huge responsibility of educating and we have to support them,” President Ali said.

Since last year, the President has spoken about the implementation of this system. President Ali had said that his government will roll out a digital ‘panic button’ system to help domestic violence victims quickly alert security agencies and receive emergency assistance.
