The race for a seat on the plane to Grenada shifts to the newly minted Bayroc National Stadium this Saturday, as Guyana’s elite junior athletes face the second round trials for the CARIFTA Games trials, as the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) looks to finalise a squad.

The region’s premier Junior Track and Field Championship will be held over the Easter Weekend (April  4-6) at the Kirani James Stadium in St. George’s.

“We are in full preparation mode,” says AAG President Amanda Hermanstine. “We have been building this team since October, focusing on the mental and technical aspects. I am confident this 2026 crop will uphold our proud tradition.”

Several of Guyana’s established stars have already punched their tickets to the Games.

Tianna Springer (400m) and Athaleyha Hinckson (100m/200m) lead a formidable female contingent, while Malachi Austin and Javon Roberts continue to set the pace for the males.

In the 100m, Ezekiel Millington and Skylar Charles both sit just seven-hundredths of a second outside the 10.55s benchmark.

The field events are equally tense, with Long Jumpers Duel Europe and Walton Alleyne needing just a few metres of extra flight to meet the 7.10m standard.

    Qualified Athletes:

    Females

    • Tianna Springer – 400m
    • Athaleyha Hinckson – 100m / 200m
    • Teisanna Harris – 100m
    • Angel Jeffrey – 100m / 200m

    Males

    • Tishan Easton – 200m / 400m
    • Javon Roberts – 800m / 1500m
    • Malachi Austin – 200m / 400m
    • Dequan Farrell – 200m
    • Onesi Dunn – 100m

Athletes on the CARIFTA Watch list

    • Ezekiel Millington – 100m (10.62; standard 10.55)
    • Skylar Charles – 100m (10.61; standard 10.55)
    • Hutson – 100m (11.03; standard 11.00)
