The MODEC Tertiary Education Football tournament enters the ‘business end’  as the final eight teams were officially outfitted with full playing kits ahead of a high-stakes quarter-final weekend.

At a presentation ceremony held at the Ministry of Education on Saturday, officials from MODEC and the Petra Organisation signalled a shift in intensity for the inaugural competition.

With the group stages concluded, the remaining technical institutes and university campuses are now competing for a $300,000 grand prize earmarked for school developmental projects.

The tournament is carving out a unique niche in the Guyanese sporting calendar by bridging the gap between athletics and industry.

MODEC Country Manager Rafael Fumis revealed that the partnership will soon extend beyond the touchline with an upcoming career and technical seminar.

“We want to help you prepare for the future,” Fumis told the assembled players. “MODEC will soon host a career talk for the teams to learn about opportunities in the energy sector. Whether your future is in sports, engineering, or another field, we want to provide practical advice for building that path.”

Petra co-director Troy Mendonca praised the resilience of the participating institutions, noting that the “uniqueness” of the inaugural tournament brought out a high level of dedication from teams that had to be built from scratch.

The quarter-finalists are fighting for a spot in the March 5 semi-finals as The tournament will culminate in a grand finale on March 8. ‘
