‘Valuable learning experience’ for Guyanese trio at Junior South American Squash Championships

Guyana’s young squash trio may have missed out on the podium in Paraguay, but a series of gritty performances at the Junior South American Championships have been of wholesome value in furthering their careers.

For the first time in the tournament, Guyana was represented on the South American stage, with Egan Bulkan, Emily Fung-A-Fat, and Ethan Bulkan navigating a massive field of 255 athletes.

While they didn’t go deep into the final rounds, the ” learning curve” in Asunción proved to be a valuable litmus test for the nation’s rising talent.

The standout drama of the week belonged to Ethan Bulkan, who embodied the Guyanese spirit in a marathon see-saw battle against a  Bolivian opponent.

In a match that tested both his physical reserves and mental fortitude, Ethan clawed back from a 2-1 deficit to win a fifth-set thriller 14-12.

The victory propelled him into the Round of 16, but his run ended there at the hands of Colombia’s top seed.

Falling just short of the quarter-finals against the tournament’s number four seed was no disgrace; rather, it was a benchmark of how close Guyana’s juniors are to the continental elite.

Emily Fung-A-Fat also found herself in the thick of a Round of 16 battle, pushing her opponent to the limit in a four-set contest (6-11, 11-6, 9-11, 12-14) that could have gone either way.

Meanwhile, in the U15 Plate draw, Egan Bulkan showed remarkable resilience. After an early exit from the main bracket, Egan re-focused to claim back-to-back victories over Brazilian and regional opposition, but lost his semi-final in the plate round.

“Although we didn’t win, Team Guyana showed South America Squash that we belong,” the team management noted.

The trio is already back in action locally, competing in the ongoing Bounty Farm Mash Handicap, which features a massive 92-player field and likely 186 matches.
