The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Friday confirmed the death of a 70-year-old male patient who reportedly jumped from a second-floor ward while receiving treatment at the institution. An internal review has since been launched to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement, the hospital said the patient had been admitted on February 8, 2026, after sustaining a self-inflicted injury to the right side of his neck. He underwent emergency surgery, which included repair of a right-sided pharyngeal injury and the placement of a tracheostomy.

According to the hospital, the patient remained under close medical supervision throughout his hospitalisation. He was placed on suicide watch and received ongoing psychiatric monitoring and support.

However, on Thursday, at approximately 12:41 hrs, the patient reportedly jumped from a second-floor ward area. Medical staff responded immediately and transported him to the Accident and Emergency Department, where advanced resuscitative measures were initiated.

Clinical assessments revealed that he had sustained severe traumatic injuries.

Despite aggressive medical intervention, including ventilatory support, administration of blood products, and vasopressor therapy, his condition continued to deteriorate. The patient subsequently went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 14:10 hrs.

The hospital also expressed concern about what it described as a recent increase in suicide attempt cases being managed at the facility, including among vulnerable populations. GPHC noted that its clinical teams are continuing to provide care, enhanced monitoring, and strengthened safety measures for patients experiencing mental health distress. The institution said it is working closely with national mental health services and relevant partners to ensure timely intervention and support.

GPHC extended condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.

The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety, improved monitoring systems, and ensuring that patients requiring mental health support receive appropriate supervision and care.
