Arjoon and Fung-A-Fat set for ‘Elite showdown’ at Bounty Farms handicap Squash
Alex Arjoon and Mary Fung-A-Fat will go head-to-head in a blockbuster Elite final on Sunday as the Bounty Farms Handicap Squash tournament reaches its climax at the Georgetown Club Courts.
In a day of high-octane action, the tournament’s handicap system continued to test the nerves and fitness of Guyana’s top players, producing several nail-biting finishes and narrow escapes for the pre-tournament favourites.
Alex Arjoon [3] secured his path to the final with a tactical masterclass against Ashley Khalil. Despite the pressure of the handicap deficit, Arjoon showed remarkable composure to take the match 15-11, 15-14, narrowly avoiding a deciding third set in a tense final rally.
He will face an in-form Mary Fung-A-Fat, who looked clinical in her semi-final victory over Ashante Smith [4]. Fung-A-Fat dictated the tempo from the outset, moving her opponent effectively around the glass to secure a 15-12, 15-6 win.
Elsewhere in the Elite bracket, Jason-Ray Khalil [2] survived a major scare against Peter de Groot, clawing back to win 15-5, 15-14, while Taylor Fernandes-Henry required three sets to overcome a resilient Steven Xavier 15-8, 13-15, 15-9.
The Open category threw up arguably the match of the day in a brotherly duel. Ethan Bulkan [3] eventually triumphed over Egan Bulkan [5] in a 7-15, 15-2, 15-14 thriller that came down to the final point of the third set.
In the Rising category, top seed Nicholas Mohamed [1] justified his ranking with a professional 15-10, 15-11 victory over Averi Simon, while Samara Sukhai pulled off the upset of the afternoon by knocking out fifth seed Fola Cadogan in a three-set marathon (15-13, 14-15, 15-13).
