Mahaicony and Upper Corentyne to clash in inaugural MODEC Tertiary football final

Mahaicony Technical Institute (MTI) and Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre (UCITC) will contest the first-ever MODEC Tertiary Football League final following a pair of gritty semi-final victories at the No. 5 Ground on Friday.
The two outfits emerged from a ‘bruising’ afternoon of football to secure their spots in Sunday’s showpiece, where a $300,000 top prize for a school project awaits the winners.
The second semi-final provided the day’s most dramatic action as MTI overcame New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) 2-1 in a clash that exploded into life after a cagey first half.
Tyrell Delph broke the deadlock for Mahaicony in the 55th minute, only for NATI to strike back almost immediately through Howard Smith.
The parity lasted until the 74th minute when Omar Williams found the back of the net, sending the MTI bench into raptures and securing their ticket to the final.
In the opening fixture, Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre relied on a solitary first-half strike to overcome Essequibo Technical Institute 1-0.
Raevon Simon proved to be the match-winner, converting in the 39th minute.
Despite a relentless second-half push from Essequibo, the UCITC defensive line—led by a determined back four—held firm to preserve the clean sheet and the victory.
Supported by corporate giants including MACORP, Demerara Mutual, and Banks DIH under the Powerade brand, the final is scheduled for this Sunday at Queen’s College Ground from 15;30h.
