The arrival of the MS Hebridean Sky at the GuySuCo Sugar Terminal has marked another milestone in Guyana’s growing cruise tourism sector, as the country continues to position itself as a destination for high-end, nature-focused travel.

The small luxury expedition vessel brings some 70 cruise members and over 80 passengers. It is known for traveling to remote and environmentally-rich destinations around the world.

During their stay, passengers are set to experience some of Guyana’s most iconic attractions, including trips to Kaieteur Falls, excursions along the Mahaica River, and tours of Georgetown’s heritage sites. Visitors will also indulge in a traditional seven-curry culinary experience and explore the Guyana Botanical Gardens.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, said the visit reflects the rapid expansion of cruise tourism locally.

“Cruise tourism is relatively new in Guyana and it is rapidly expanding and the government of Guyana is fully committed to investing in our infrastructure, including our porting infrastructure to accommodate more vessels like this one coming to Guyana,” the minister said.

Rodrigues highlighted ongoing efforts to improve port infrastructure, explaining that upgrades to facilities such as the GuySuCo Sugar Terminal, where the ship is currently docked, are part of a broader plan to accommodate more vessels. Already the government is exploring the development of new ports to facilitate docking of large vessels and shipment.

She emphasised that the government is committed to building strong partnerships within the cruise industry to attract more expedition-class ships to Guyana’s shores.

Looking ahead, the minister announced that she will represent Guyana at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami from April 13 to 16, the largest global gathering of cruise industry leaders.

“There I am hoping to form some strategic partnerships that will encourage more visits,” Rodrigues said.

Rodrigues also underscored the importance of diversifying Guyana’s tourism product, with a focus on nature-based experiences and cultural immersion, key elements that appeal to expedition cruise passengers.

Captain Phillipa Ann Bowden of the Hebridean Sky praised the country’s direction, noting that the cruise line supports and recognises Guyana’s vision for developing sustainable tourism.

“We support and recognize and thank you for your vision in improving and encouraging sustainable tourism,” Captain Bowden said.

The visit of the vessel signals growing confidence among international cruise operators in Guyana and paves the way for the country to become a key destination in the expedition cruise market.
