A Guyanese-born leader with a distinguished military and corporate career has been selected as an ambassador for New York University’s prestigious Master of Science in Health Law and Strategy (MSHLS) programme, representing Guyana, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

Melissa Vieira-Greene, a retired United States Air Force senior leader and CEO of Human Resources Warrior LLC, is currently pursuing the graduate programme jointly offered by NYU Law and NYU Wagner. Her selection as an ambassador places her among a select group of global representatives promoting the programme and supporting prospective students.

Vieira-Greene, who spent her early years in Guyana before moving to Brooklyn, said the opportunity reflects more than personal achievement.

“I see this as more than a personal milestone. It creates visibility for others from Guyana, the Caribbean, and Latin America to see themselves in global academic and leadership spaces,” she said.

With 21 years of service in the U.S. Air Force, Vieira-Greene built a career leading high-performing teams in high-pressure environments, including four overseas deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Her work spanned human resources, workforce planning, logistics, finance, disaster preparedness, and strategic operations.

She later transitioned into the private sector, serving with International SOS Guyana Inc., where she oversaw human resources, finance, and operations during a period of rapid growth.

Vieira-Greene focuses on leadership development, particularly for first-generation professionals and women navigating complex career environments.

Her decision to pursue the NYU Law-Wagner programme was driven by the need to strengthen decision-making at the intersection of law, finance, and ethics.

“Throughout my career, the decisions I have been responsible for making often involve legal, financial, and ethical considerations simultaneously,” she explained.

“The programme brings these areas together in a way that reflects real-world leadership. It has strengthened my approach to evaluating decisions and operational challenges, enabling me to take a broader view.”

Vieira-Greene is also on track to become the first Guyanese graduate of the MSHLS programme, further cementing her place as a trailblazer.

Her journey—from a close-knit Guyanese upbringing to military leadership at the Pentagon and now academic recognition at one of the world’s leading universities—underscores a consistent focus on service, resilience, and leadership.

“Leadership starts with responsibility for others,” she said, reflecting on the values instilled in her early years.

As she continues her studies and leadership work, Vieira-Greene is using her platform to inspire others across Guyana and the wider region to pursue opportunities on the global stage.
