Twelve-year-old William Vieira etched his name into the history books on Sunday, becoming the inaugural Briggs & Stratton Cadet champion at the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club’s (GMR&SC) ‘Revival Karting’ meet.

In a high-octane atmosphere at the 555 Speedway, situated at the junction of Thomas Lands and Albert Street, the next generation of Guyanese speedsters took centre stage on Sunday.

Vieira, piloting the #38 kart, delivered a composed performance to take the chequered flag, though the youngster was quick to point out that his racing ambitions must share the podium with his education.

“I’m delighted to have achieved this,” Vieira said following the trophy presentation. “I definitely want to get more seat time, but I have to balance that with my studies at Marian Academy.”

It wasn’t a lonely stroll to the finish for Vieira. Asrudeen Jayden Mohamed secured a hard-fought second place, describing the event as a “valuable learning experience.”

“I’m eager to compete again,” Mohamed noted, signalling his intent to swap his silver trophy for gold at the next meet. He finished just ahead of Nathan Seejatan, who rounded out the podium in third.

Seejatan, son of highly successful racer Shan Seejatan, remained philosophical about the result. “You don’t always win,” the youngster remarked. “I know where I have to improve to win like my dad. I will get them next time.”

While the juniors provided the thrills, the Briggs Senior Light class was shrouded in drama.

Calvin Ming initially crossed the line first but was subsequently disqualified following a technical infringement.

Ming has officially exercised his right of appeal. As a result, the podium for the Senior Light class remains provisional while race control deliberates.

However, Ming found redemption elsewhere, dominating the IAME X30 Senior category
