The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has issued a severe weather advisory, warning of above-normal rainfall across Guyana from April 1 to April 3, with the potential for widespread flooding and hazardous conditions.

According to the CDC, the advisory follows guidance from the Hydrometeorological Service, which indicated that continued rainfall could significantly increase flood risks across several regions.

Authorities warned that soils are already saturated due to recent rainfall, meaning any additional precipitation could quickly lead to flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Hilly and elevated regions are also at risk, with the possibility of mudslides during periods of intense rainfall.

The advisory highlights several additional risks, including:

    • Strong winds and lightning associated with thunderstorms
    • Drainage overflow and road inundation
    • Agricultural flooding, threatening crops and livestock
    • Disruptions to transportation, including hinterland access and airstrips

The CDC is urging residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions as conditions are expected to deteriorate.

    Citizens are advised to:

    • Avoid flood-prone areas where possible
    • Exercise caution when driving or walking during heavy rainfall
    • Keep drains and waterways clear to reduce flooding
    • Secure important documents and valuables

The commission also encouraged the public to monitor official updates and report flooding or rising water levels to the National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS).
