Ottis Gibson returns to West Indies as fast-bowling consultant

In a move that signals a return to specialist expertise, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has secured the services of Ottis Gibson as the men’s team’s new fast-bowling consultant.
The 56-year-old, whose coaching resume reads like a world tour of international setups, joins on an initial one-year contract.
Gibson is no stranger to the Maroon cap, having served as the side’s head coach between 2010 and 2014—a period that included the 2012 T20 World Cup title.
More recently, he acted as a consultant during the West Indies’ historic series against Nepal in September 2025. This formal appointment, however, places him at the heart of the “engine room” as the Caribbean side prepares for a heavy 2026 itinerary.
With a home season against Sri Lanka looming in June, followed by the CPL and tours to India and Bangladesh, CWI is acutely aware of the “red zone” for its pace assets. Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe noted that the appointment was a direct result of the Emergency Strategy & Committee Meeting held last August.
“Fast bowling has always been central to West Indies cricket,” Bascombe said. “As we prepare for an extended and demanding period, it is critical that we invest in the strength, depth, and durability of this group. Ottis brings a wealth of experience, insight, and proven success.”
The timing of Gibson’s arrival is tactical. West Indies are currently eyeing automatic qualification for the 2027 ICC Men’s World Cup, a priority following their struggles in the previous cycle.
By bringing in a specialist of Gibson’s caliber, CWI hopes to bridge the gap between raw talent and elite-level consistency.
For Gibson, the task is clear: managing the transition of young prospects like Jediah Blades while ensuring senior spearheads remain fit for all formats.
“I’m looking forward to working with the various coaches and the very talented group of bowlers in the Caribbean,” Gibson said. “The goal is to assist in their development across all formats of the game.”
Gibson’s first assignment begins with the preparatory camps ahead of the Sri Lanka series, where he will look to fine-tune a unit that remains the Caribbean’s most potent weapon on the global stage. (Modified CWI Press Release)
