Rain continues to play spoilsport in Guyana-Barbados U16 series

The prevailing inclement weather in Guyana continues to frustrate the ongoing bilateral Under-16 50-over series between the hosts and Barbados.

On Thursday, the third scheduled match day was washed out without a ball being bowled at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.

This marks the latest setback in a series that has struggled to find a rhythm against the elements.

To date, only one match has yielded a result—a 76-run victory for Guyana on Wednesday at Eve Leary.

With the series stalling and Barbados scheduled to depart on April 7, the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) is reportedly exploring alternative venues to ensure the youngsters get time on the field.

One venue in contention is the upgraded Albion Sports Complex in Berbice, given that there are only three more potential playing days.

Guyana’s head coach, Yeuraj Khemraj, emphasised the developmental cost of the rain. “The priority is seeing these players spend time in the middle,” Khemraj noted, expressing hope that the skies clear ahead of Saturday’s scheduled fixture.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has maintained a clear stance on the philosophy behind this year’s U16 format, focusing on scouting and development rather than competitive silverware.

“Priority was placed on maintaining playing opportunities and broadening scouting reach,” a CWI statement read. “No overall winner will be declared at the end of the series, with emphasis placed squarely on assessing and identifying talent.”
