The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is cautioning minibus, hire car and other public transport operators to “act with professionalism and restraint,” as they traverse the roadways.

The police issued a statement urging all road users across the country to exercise heightened caution, patience and responsibility while using the nation’s roadways during the Easter weekend.

Speaking about vehicles used to transport passengers, the police said “competition for passengers must never take precedence over human life and safety.”

As Guyanese celebrate Easter 2026, the GPF pointed to of increased travel and public activity associated with the Rupununi Ranchers’ Rodeo, which is being held in Lethem over the April 3 to April 5 period, noting that motorists traversing the roadways to Lethem are being strongly advised to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and all other reckless behaviour that may endanger lives.

They are also being warned not to drive under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicating substance.

Further, they are advised to ensure that they are properly rested before commencing their journey, that their vehicles are roadworthy and that all relevant documents, including driver’s license, certificate of fitness, registration, insurance and tint permit where applicable, are in order.

Drivers are further encouraged to remain alert at all times, observe road signs, maintain safe following distances and adjust their speed according to the speed limits, road and weather conditions.

Motorcyclists are reminded to wear their safety helmets properly fastened at all times, while pedal cyclists are urged to remain visible and exercise due care when using the roadway.

Pedestrians are also being encouraged to use the roads responsibly and to remain mindful of vehicular traffic, especially in busy areas and along public roads where traffic volume may increase during the holiday period.

Commissioner of Police Mr. Clifton Hicken has reiterated the importance of collective responsibility and is urging all road users to act in a manner that will help to preserve life and promote safety on the nation’s roadways.

The Guyana Police Force said it remains committed to maintaining a strong and visible presence across the country’s road network and is appealing to all citizens to make safety their priority so that the Easter weekend can be safe, peaceful and incident-free for all.
