Zion Hickerson seals impressive tennis double at IJT Cup

St. Gabriel’s Primary student Zion Hickerson has underlined his status as one of the country’s most promising young multisport athletes, producing a commanding display to secure both the Under-12 and Under-14 titles at the IJT Cup.
Hosted by the BCR Tennis Club over the Easter weekend, the tournament served as a clear indicator of the young player’s growing dominance on the court.
In the Under-14 division, Hickerson navigated a path to the final with clinical efficiency, highlighted by a convincing 6-1 semifinal victory over Joshua Culpeper.
The final itself offered a sterner test against Rebel Tennis Club’s Rafeek Prince, but Hickerson rose to the occasion in an entertaining battle to emerge victorious with a 6-4 scoreline.
His path to the final was marked by a flawless group stage campaign, where he dispatched Christian Pompey, Davante Lovel, and Virat Peter with emphatic scorelines.
He proved equally untouchable in the Under-12 category, registering perfect 6-0 victories against both Davion Fergusson and Juan Diego Perdomo.
While the tennis court currently serves as his primary stage, Hickerson’s athletic versatility continues to turn heads. Just last week, he traded his racquet for a football kit, lining up for Camptown FC to help the side claim a commendable second-place finish in the Exchange Cup Under-12 competition, organised by the Vurlon Mills Football Academy.
The young talent’s competitive momentum shows no signs of slowing down, as he immediately turns his attention to a new challenge this week.
Hickerson is set to compete in the Under-13 category at the upcoming Moo Junior National Squash Championships, testing his coordination and speed in a different arena.
His rapid development and busy competition schedule are supported by a dedicated roster of sponsors, including Enet, Acado Guyana, BK, Beacon Cafe, Fireside, Modern Optical, Smalta, and a group of individual benefactors.
