The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) has maintained a steady hand at the helm following its Annual General Meeting and Election of Office Bearers on Saturday.

Incumbent President David Fernandes was elected unopposed to lead the association for the upcoming term, heading an executive body that reflects both continuity and a progressive shift in the sport’s administration.

A defining feature of the newly elected board is the significant surge in female representation within executive roles.

While much of the previous slate has returned to office, the board’s composition highlights a deliberate move toward inclusivity.

The executive team includes Loraine Ince as Vice-President, Victoria Arjoon as Secretary, Ashley DeGroot-Khalil as Treasurer, and Ashley Khalil as Assistant Secretary/Treasurer.

Further leadership comes from Roseann Bulkan, who oversees Junior Affairs, and Tian Edwards, who serves as Chairperson of Competitions.

Deje Dias rounds out the committee as the representative for Clubs, while Owen Verwey continues as the Returning Past President and Alex Arjoon remains the Athletes Representative.

Due to the absence of an AGM last year, the current executive has accepted a one-year term in a gesture of good faith to ensure the association remains aligned with its constitutional requirements and best governance practices.

Reflecting on the successful election, President Fernandes emphasised the unique culture of the sport in Guyana, noting that the association operates less like a rigid organisation and more like a dedicated family.

He stressed that as opportunities for Guyanese players continue to expand on the international stage, maintaining this sense of unity is essential to safeguarding the sport’s long-term future.

The association is entering this new term on the heels of major infrastructural milestones. A definitive highlight of 2025 was the commissioning of the new doubles courts, a long-held dream that has now become a reality.

This expansion brings the total number of singles courts at the public facility to five, drastically increasing the training resources available to local athletes.

Looking ahead, the GSA is already shifting its focus toward major international commitments.

With the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport committing to the continued development of these facilities, the association is positioning itself for a massive undertaking as Guyana prepares to host the Pan American Junior Championships in 2027.
