The Ministry of Natural Resources, through the Guyana Forestry Commission, has partnered with the European Union (EU) to advance efforts aimed at reducing deforestation and forest degradation within the Amazon Rainforest.

The initiative forms part of the Amazonia+ Programme funded by the EU and led by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, in partnership with the Pau Costa Foundation. The programme promotes the responsible use of fire as a tool for sustainable land management, while simultaneously reducing the risk and impact of destructive wildfires across the region.

As part of this effort, a series of training sessions under the Community Brigades initiative (BRICOM) was conducted from April 14-16, 2026, in Linden, Region 10. The training brought together representatives from local communities and key national institutions, including the Civil Defence Commission, the Guyana Fire Service, the Protected Areas Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Participants were engaged in practical and technical sessions designed to deepen their understanding of fire behaviour, strengthen the operational readiness of community brigades and promote approaches that balance environmental protection with sustainable community development.

This initiative is critical for Guyana as it reinforces the country’s commitment to sustainable forest management and climate resilience. By equipping communities and institutions with the knowledge and tools to manage fire responsibly, Guyana is better positioned to protect its vast forest resources while supporting livelihoods.

The Ministry of Natural Resources remains committed to working with international partners and local stakeholders to ensure that Guyana’s forests continue to serve as a cornerstone of its environmental and economic sustainability. (Ministry of Natural Resources media release)
