Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton scored blistering half-centuries as Mumbai Indians kept their Indian Premier League play-off hopes alive with a six-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit top-scored with 84 off 44 balls, including seven sixes, while Rickelton scored 83 off 32 (eight sixes) as the five-time champions chased 229 with eight balls to spare.

Together, they put on 143 runs off just 65 balls for the first wicket before Rickelton was removed by Mohsin Khan.

Manimaran Siddharth later picked up two wickets in quick succession to set home nerves jangling with just 40 runs needed off 27 deliveries but a brisk 23 not out (12) from Naman Dhir and a match-winning six from England’s Will Jacks saw Mumbai over the line.

Earlier, Nicholas Pooran smacked 63 runs off just 21 balls, including dispatching Jacks for three sixes in his only powerplay over, as Lucknow Super Giants passed 120 inside eight overs.

However, Corbin Bosch struck twice in five balls to remove Pooran and Mitchell Marsh (44 off 25) as the batting side faltered from 123-1 to 160-5. Although Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh added an unbeaten 68 for the sixth wicket, the Super Giants’ total proved insufficient.

The result ends a run of three defeats for ninth-placed Mumbai, who are six points off the top four with four matches to play.
