President Ali calls for unity and shared prosperity in Arrival Day message

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has urged Guyanese to embrace unity, inclusivity, and shared responsibility as the nation observes Arrival Day 2026, while also preparing to celebrate 60 years of independence.

In his national message, the President reflected on Guyana’s historic journey, noting that six decades ago the country stepped onto the world stage as a free nation. He emphasized that independence was built on the sacrifices, dreams, and contributions of generations before the raising of the Golden Arrowhead.

Dr. Ali highlighted the foundational role of Guyana’s diverse peoples, paying tribute to Indigenous communities, described as the original stewards of the land, as well as the resilience of African ancestors who endured slavery. He also acknowledged the contributions of those who came later from various parts of the world and helped shape the nation’s identity.

Focusing on the significance of Arrival Day, the President drew attention to the post-emancipation period, when indentured labourers arrived from countries such as India, China, and Portugal. He noted that May 5 also marks the 188th anniversary of the arrival of the first group of East Indian indentured immigrants to Guyana.

He paid tribute to these immigrants and their descendants, recognizing their sacrifices and the enduring impact of their traditions, cultures, religions, and labour on national development. Despite facing hardship, separation, and injustice, many chose to make Guyana their home—building families, establishing communities, and contributing across agriculture, business, and social life.

Dr. Ali said one of the country’s greatest challenges since independence has been forging unity from its diversity. He stressed that the answer lies in building a nation where every heritage is respected, every voice is heard, and no citizen feels excluded.

The President also underscored the importance of shared prosperity, pointing to Guyana’s natural resources—including oil, gold, bauxite, agriculture, forests, and fisheries—as well as its human capital. He said these must benefit all citizens equitably.

“Arrival Day should not only be a day of remembrance, but a day of responsibility,” he stated, urging citizens to honour their ancestors not just by recalling their struggles, but by advancing the ideals of justice, equality, democracy, and the rule of law.

Looking ahead to Guyana’s diamond jubilee, Dr. Ali called on citizens to work together to build a society where every child has the opportunity to succeed and where national development includes everyone.

He concluded by encouraging unity and collective action, emphasizing that Guyana’s future depends on a shared commitment to progress and inclusion.
