OPR launches multiple investigations into misconduct involving Police ranks across Guyana

The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) of the Guyana Police Force has launched a series of investigations into separate incidents involving members of the Force, including allegations of misconduct, assault, and the discovery of ammunition during an intelligence-led operation.

The OPR has commenced an investigation into an incident which occurred on Sunday, May 3, 2026, involving a senior officer of the Force, along with a police corporal and a police constable.

According to the Guyana Police Force, the investigation was initiated following the circulation of a video online relating to the incident.

In a statement, the Force emphasized that matters involving the conduct of its ranks are treated with the seriousness they deserve and assured that an impartial investigation will be carried out in keeping with standards of accountability, discipline, and professionalism.

The Force further stated that it remains committed to ensuring the matter is properly examined and that all appropriate procedures are followed. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.

In a separate matter, the Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of ammunition during an intelligence-led operation conducted at Hadfield Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at approximately 10:00 hrs.

The Guyana Police Force confirmed that a police inspector has since been placed under close arrest as investigations continue into the matter.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the quantity or nature of the ammunition discovered but indicated that additional information will be provided as the probe advances.

Meanwhile, the OPR is also probing an alleged assault involving police ranks at the Anna Regina Police Station in Region Two.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, May 8, 2026, at about 00:10 hrs.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a female rank was allegedly assaulted during an incident at the station, while another female rank was reportedly threatened.

The matter was brought to the attention of the Region’s Senior Command, following which a sergeant was arrested and placed into custody pending further investigations.

Police said the female rank was escorted to a medical institution where she was examined by a doctor.

Investigators are currently taking statements as the probe continues.
