Four fishermen rescued after boat sinks off Atlantic Coast

Four fishermen are safely back with their families after their vessel sank in the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday afternoon following turbulent conditions at sea.

The rescue operation was coordinated by Chairman of the Rosignol Fisherman’s Co-op Society Ltd, Hardat Malchan, along with Commander David Shamsudeen and ranks of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard.

According to reports, the fishermen had been at sea for five days aboard a 45-foot drift seine boat when the vessel encountered difficulties and eventually sank. Coordinated search and rescue efforts involving the Coast Guard and volunteers led to all four crew members being safely rescued.

Owner of the vessel, Alex Ramoutar, expressed gratitude for the assistance provided during the operation but said the incident resulted in the loss of the entire vessel, engine and fishing gear, estimated at approximately $12 million.

Ramoutar is now appealing for government assistance and intervention as he considers his next steps following the significant loss.
