GNBS to launch verification of tint, sound level meters soon

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) is preparing to roll out new verification services for tint meters and sound level meters, as the agency moves to strengthen accuracy and standards across key sectors in Guyana.
Head of Legal Metrology Services at the GNBS, Shailendra Rai, at a press conference on Wednesday in observance of World Metrology Day, said the agency has already completed training and acquired the necessary equipment for the new services.
“As we speak, everything is in country, equipment, training, everything completed. We are currently doing some preliminary testing and the finalisation of our procedures and work instructions and so.
“In the near future, we would be launching these services. We are just trying to ensure everything is on point,” Rai told the News Room.
According to Rai, training for sound level meters was completed in March, along with training for tint meters.
The GNBS is also preparing to commission a new meter verification system that will allow the agency to conduct verification of meters directly at its facility.
Rai revealed that as of the end of April 2026, the GNBS Legal Metrology Department conducted 15,969 verifications, 2,875 sensitization exercises, and 16 surveillance activities.
These verifications include blood pressure machines, as the GNBS expands its role within the health sector.
“Measurement is very important in the health sector in terms of ensuring accurate diagnosis of patients,” Rai said.
He explained that verification of blood pressure machines is not currently being done in Guyana and is another service the GNBS is moving to implement in the future. Training on the verification of these machines is currently underway and will continue throughout the week, covering both practical and theoretical aspects.
Additionally, the GNBS has been conducting verification of scales at health centres and hospitals across the country.
Rai said the agency also continues routine verification activities in critical sectors operating in Guyana.
