Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) has taken a significant step toward fortifying its grassroots foundations after successfully staging its ‘Introduction to Basketball Coaching’ workshop at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The initiative, delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, brought together a diverse cohort of teachers, coaches, and local stakeholders from multiple regions nationwide.

Supported by sponsorship from G-Boats Inc., the programme reflects an ongoing national effort to expand the capacity of school-based educators and youth leaders.

The intensive sessions were spearheaded by an international and local coaching contingent, including Louisiana’s Coach Daniel LaFont, President’s College coach Willon Cameron, and Manoj Yadav of the Georgetown International Academy.

Participants were immersed in foundational coaching principles, tactical philosophies, and practical strategies designed to build sustainable basketball programmes from the ground up.

Rather than focusing purely on competitive outcomes, the curriculum placed heavy emphasis on development-centred coaching, athlete preparation, and fundamentals.

It is an approach that aligns directly with YBG’s overarching operational philosophy: “Development Before Winning.” The organisation maintains that the sport must primarily serve as a vehicle for leadership, education, and discipline before competitive accolades are chased.

The intersection of sport and academia was a central theme of the workshop. Dacia Cummings, representing the Ministry of Education’s Unit of Allied Arts, addressed the attendees on the critical role structured sports programs play within the broader school system.

Cummings urged educators to actively utilise basketball to foster positive student engagement and holistic personal growth, reinforcing the government’s stance on embedding leadership training in physical education.

With the workshop drawing to a close, YBG officials expressed gratitude to their corporate partners and volunteers, while signalling that this is merely the baseline for their long-term strategy.

The organisation plans to roll out similar capacity-building programs nationwide, aiming to establish a sustainable, structured future for school basketball across all corners of Guyana.
