Sensor-controlled traffic lights being introduced to ease congestion

The government is introducing sensor-controlled traffic lights that automatically adjust to traffic conditions as part of efforts to modernise traffic management and improve efficiency on congested roads, President Irfaan Ali announced Friday.

“You will see soon the traffic lights that we will install in the city would be sensor-oriented,” the President said at a press conference in Georgetown.

“Based on what the traffic is looking, how the sensors are reading the traffic, the timing of the lights will change to allow efficiency in the system.”

Ali said the system would replace fixed traffic signals with technology that adjusts in real time depending on traffic patterns.

“Sometimes the traffic is going out of the city, sometimes in the city. So the sensors will pick this up in a predictable way and then make the decisions and adjustment within the system itself,” he said.

The smart traffic lights are part of a wider intelligent transport and security infrastructure that the government is developing as Guyana expands its use of digital technologies in public services.
