Guyana prepares for historic robotic surgery as healthcare enters new era

Guyana is preparing to make medical history with what could become the longest-distance robotic cardiac surgery ever performed.

President Irfaan Ali made the announcement during Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary celebrations at Fort Island in Essequibo Monday night, where he described the achievement as part of the country’s transformation into a modern and technologically advanced nation.

According to the President, surgeons operating from Guyana will connect with specialists in India to perform the groundbreaking robotic-assisted heart surgery using advanced remote surgical technology.

“This is the country we are building,” President Ali said during his national address. “Not afraid to embrace any tool that is necessary to position us as not only a player.”

The surgery forms part of Guyana’s growing investment in robotic healthcare systems and advanced medical technology.

The introduction of the SSI Mantra Robotic System in Guyana has already been described as a major leap forward for the country’s healthcare sector. The technology allows doctors to perform surgeries with smaller incisions, greater precision, less pain and faster recovery times for patients.

Health officials say the robotic system is expected to improve access to specialized surgical care not only in Georgetown but also in regions outside the capital including New Amsterdam and Lethem.

The initiative is part of a broader national healthcare push aimed at using technology to bring modern medicine closer to citizens across the country.

Local health officials have described the development as the beginning of a new healthcare era for Guyana, with the President referring to the transformation as “Freedom 60” during the Independence celebrations.

The announcement drew loud applause from the crowd gathered at Fort Island.
