Woman, 29, dies after car slams into parked lorry

A 29-year-old woman died late Sunday night after the car she was travelling in crashed into a parked lorry along the Sarah Johanna Access Road, East Bank Demerara.

Dead is Lisa Blackman of Turkeyen, Georgetown.

According to Police Headquarters, the fatal accident occurred at about 22:40hrs and involved motor car PNN 7493 and motor lorry GAJ 4979. Initial investigations revealed that the motor car, driven by a 42-year-old man of Turkeyen, was proceeding north along the western side of the roadway allegedly at a fast rate when the driver reportedly lost control and collided with the left rear portion of the parked lorry.

The lorry, owned by a 25-year-old resident of Sarah Johanna, was reportedly parked on the western side of the road at the time of the collision.

As a result of the impact, the driver and two passengers sustained injuries. Police said Blackman, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was pulled from the wreckage by public-spirited citizens along with the driver and rushed to the New Diamond Regional Hospital under police escort.

She was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.

The driver was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for further medical attention. Another occupant of the vehicle, a 36-year-old miner of Quamina Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, became trapped inside the car and had to be rescued by firefighters. He was subsequently taken to the New Diamond Regional Hospital, where he remains a patient. Blackman’s body is currently at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police said CCTV cameras in the area captured the incident and the footage will be reviewed as investigations continue. Due to the severity of the driver’s injuries, no breathalyser test was conducted.
