Seven schools temporarily closed due to flooding

Just seven schools across Guyana have been temporarily closed as a result of ongoing weather-related challenges, following nationwide assessments conducted by education officials over the weekend.

In a public statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of Education said Education Officers visited more than 75 per cent of schools nationwide on Sunday, May 31, to evaluate conditions and ensure learning environments remain safe and accessible amid recent heavy rainfall.

The assessments found that only seven schools required temporary closure due to weather-related impacts. The Ministry said it is working closely with the affected institutions to provide support and implement alternative arrangements to ensure students’ education continues with minimal disruption.

The Ministry noted that it has been actively monitoring the recent rainfall and its effects on schools throughout the country.

Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain said the Ministry remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of students and staff while continuing to provide timely updates as the situation develops.

The Ministry also commended the efforts of Education Officers who participated in the nationwide assessments and expressed gratitude to parents, teachers and communities for their cooperation during the ongoing adverse weather conditions.

Officials said monitoring efforts will continue as weather conditions evolve across the country.
