Shemar Britton and teenage sensation Samara Sukhai took centre stage at the National Gymnasium, claiming the premier singles titles as the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Independence Tournament reached a thrilling conclusion over the weekend.

Britton asserted his dominance in the Men’s Singles field, executing a masterclass in the final to dispatch Jonathan Van Lange 4-1.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Sukhai proved that age is just a number. The Grade 10 Queen’s College student paired remarkable discipline with fierce perseverance to edge Nevaeh Clarkston 3-2 in a breathless, five-game Women’s Singles epic.

Kayden Meusa bounced back from his senior quarter-final exit to claim the Under-15 Boys’ title, defeating Abraao Ferreira DeOliveira in the final after earlier seeing off Vivek Bassoo.

In the open categories, Colin Wong showed immense grit to snatch the B-Class Open Singles title, coming out on top of a dramatic five-game thriller against Malachi Moore.

There was also a celebration for Yeudistir Persaud, who outmanoeuvred Shurwain Sahadeo to hoist the C-Class Open Singles silverware.

The doubles circuit brought a fascinating blend of youth and experience to the tables. Sukhai added to her burgeoning medal tally by partnering with S. Damon to sweep the Women’s Doubles title.

However, her bid for a clean sweep was thwarted in the Mixed Doubles, where the veteran presence of Colin France, partnering with Nevaeh Clarkston, proved too strong for Sukhai and Malachi Moore in the final.
